The new IntelliFlo pump by Pentair is a real break through in pump technology for use in koi ponds. This new generation of pumps uses a permanent magnet motor (used in hybrid cars) in place of traditional induction type motors. This new technology makes these pumps up to 30% more efficient than convention pumps on the market today. Couple this with the fact that the IntelliFlo pumps also include computerized variable speed capacity and you could have the perfect pump for koi pond use.
Variable speed- This allows you to dial in exactly what flow works best for your operation. For instance, you might need 65 gallons per minute for your pond during the summer months, yet during the winter, when the koi are eating less and the water contains more oxygen you might only need 45 gallons per minute. With this pump you can set up a “winter mode” setting on one button at 45 gallons per minute. Now, by simply pushing a single button, you can reduce your energy consumption by over 50% during the winter. Another option you might enjoy is to be able to, on occasion, increase the water flow over your waterfall. To do this you might select another button and set up a “waterfall” mode at 80 gallons per minute. Now by simply pushing a single button you have your rushing waterfall. The energy consumption will be more but you may only be using this mode on special occasions.
Efficiency- The IntelliFlo pump allows you to adjust your pump so that you use only the amount of energy required for your needs at the time. Keep in mind that when a pump speeds is reduced by 50%, the energy consumption may drop by as much as 80%. All IntelliFlo pumps require 220 volts.
Ease of use- Programming an IntelliFlo pump is as easy as setting the stations on your car radio. With the pump running, simply press one of the four speed buttons to switch to the desired speed (factory settings are 750, 1500, 2350 and 3110 RPM). Then just press the “up” or “down” buttons to increase or decrease the speed setting between 400 RPM and 3450 RPM. This speed now becomes your new “preset speed” for that button. It is that simple to optimize water flow for any application.
Change your system without changing your pump- The IntelliFlo pumps work especially well with the Advantage systems in that if you purchased an Advantage Bead filter and later decided to add an Advantage Glass filter you won’t need to change your pump to accommodate the slight increase in head pressure.
